Podiatrists are primary healthcare providers who can assess, diagnose and treat conditions affecting the lower limb, and in particular, the feet. A Podiatrist’s scope of practice ranges from the traditional Chiropody treatments of nail care, corns and callus, to biomechanics and minor surgical procedures. Podiatrists take a holistic approach, involving an individual’s medical history and lifestyle, as well as how the whole body performs in relation to the lower limb and feet.

What is Chiropody?

Traditional Chiropody includes the treatment of corns and callus using sharp debridement as well as nail care to maintain healthy feet. Padding is used to offload high pressure areas facilitating mobility and strapping techniques are used to support structures involved in movement. Podiatrists are able to supply and administer certain medications and are able to treat wounds with a variety of specialized dressings.

Utilising Biomechanics

Biomechanics involves the posture and function of the lower limb and feet, in relation to dynamic movement. Podiatrists use gait analysis and a ‘hands on’ approach to assess musculoskeletal function. Biomechanical treatments include stretching, exercises, and individually prescribed orthotics.

Minor Surgery

Podiatrists can perform minor surgical procedures, under local anaesthetic, to treat a variety of nail conditions that have not responded to conservative treatment, such as ingrowing or infected toenails and nails that are painful due to an abnormal shape. These procedures have a high success rate and the strictest standards of hygiene and sterilization are adhered to.

Our multidisciplinary approach at Body Consultancy means that you will promptly receive the treatments most suitable to your needs, which may involve referral to other therapists within the clinic.
