Have you ever heard of the Temporomandibular joint, otherwise known as the TMJ?  If you don’t know what it is, the TMJ is the joint that connects the lower jaw joint to the skull.

Did you know many health problems can result from the TMJ, causing TMJ disorders (TMJD). This is typically caused by trauma to the joint or jaw, however, there are many other reasons for the cause of TMJD. Arthritis, clenching of the teeth, erosion of the joint or even structural jaw problems are all possible causes of the disorder.

Symptoms of TMJ vary greatly depending on its severity and how the condition was caused. Typically, the main symptom of TMJ is jaw pain, however other symptoms also occur. These include:

  • Pain in the face or neck.
  • Muscle stiffness in the jaw.
  • Limited movement of the jaw.
  • Locking of the jaw.
  • Clicking or popping sound from the TMJ site.
  • Shift in the jaw, changing the way that the upper and lower teeth align.

So, you ask, what is the treatment for TMJD? Treatment focuses on self-care practices that take place at home. These include eating soft foods, reducing jaw movement, avoiding gum, practicing jaw movement exercises, and even using ice to reduce the swelling.

Preventing TMJD from developing may not be possible, however reducing the symptoms is possible by using home remedies, changing your posture, and reducing stress.
