Gillian Blake, BSc (Hons) Dip LSSM ARNI ESMT
Clinical Rehabilitation Specialist and Sports Massage Therapist
I’m a fully qualified level 5 sports massage therapist and have been practising for over ten years. Recently I took myself back to university and completed a degree with honours in clinical exercise science and rehabilitation. This means I’m able to rehabilitate patients with different conditions including diabetes, cardiac disease and arthritis – and design rehabilitation programs based on recent evidence-based research.
The degree also provided me with in-depth knowledge on gait analysis. That means I don’t look at a patient’s feet when they’re moving, but at their body as a whole and how their gait affects them overall. Based on these findings I can then design an exercise program to strengthen areas or just advise on how to improve stride length or foot positioning.
Following my degree I went on to complete post graduate studies in stroke rehabilitation. Since then I’ve been able to help many stroke survivors gain strength and movement – especially in their hands and shoulders.
I love learning about the body and how it works. The new evidence that’s being discovered on a daily basis fascinates me. I’m always interested in expanding my knowledge and have recently returned from Turkey where I did another fantastic course on dynamic neuromuscular stabilization. I’m hoping to progress my knowledge next year by doing a course in dry needling.
In my spare time I love spending time with my daughter, her pony and my horses. I also enjoy the gym and spending time with my friends.
